Travel Characteristic Surveys

Travel characteristic surveys are used to develop transportation facility inventories that can be used to identify the scale of present system inadequacies, provide a basis to forecast future land use and travel, derive travel relationships, and calibrate travel demand models. The information collected can be used to identify origin-destination travel patterns, physical facility characteristics, average travel speed, travel time/delay, traffic volumes, and parking characteristics. Depending on the goals of the survey and data collection methodologies, these studies can be used to help agencies plan and program major roadway systems and improvements or define travel behavior and travel patterns within a study area.

PBS&J possesses unique experience in conducting travel characteristic surveys to identify driver behavior and travel patterns. Our experience in conducting travel characteristics surveys covers a broad spectrum and includes responsibilities such as data collection, survey management, and data analysis. Key travel demand model parameters are estimated from survey responses for application in future model development, validation, and calibration efforts. Surveys performed have included the application of various techniques for data collection aimed at achieving the desired balance between travel behavior needs and available budget.
