Traffic Operations and Simulation

More than ever before, highly sophisticated traffic analysis and simulation software is being used to assess the efficiency of our transportation systems. This software allows us to get the most out of our existing transportation infrastructure, while planning and designing better roadway networks. Simulation also provides the means to test a transportation system plan or design before a single dollar is ever spent on construction.

Not only do simulations allow alternative transportation solutions to be compared based on operating parameters, it also allows them to be compared visually based on 3D renderings of the facilities proposed. Additionally, these renderings are a very effective means of demonstrating to the public how a facility will actually look and perform once constructed.

Analysis and simulation can typically be used for the following transportation elements:

  • Corridor planning and environmental studies
  • Emergency and evacuation planning
  • Freeways
  • Grade-separated interchanges
  • Intelligent transportation systems (ITS)
  • Maintenance of traffic plans
  • Pedestrian and bicycle activity
  • Public involvement and public hearings
  • Rest areas, convention centers, weigh stations
  • Roundabout intersections
  • Surface streets
  • Toll facilities
  • Transit and heavy rail crossings

PBS&J has extensive experience with a multitude of traffic analysis and simulation software, including Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Synchro/ Simtraffic, CORSIM, VISSIM, AIMSUN, aaSIDRA, and RODEL. Using state-of-the-art software, our professionals can generate life-like models at any level of complexity. Our use of 3D modeling and animation enables us to identify and analyze both planned and unplanned improvements, and solve potential design problems, saving time, money, and resources.
