Long-Range Transportation Plans Providing a safe transportation system that ensures efficient mobility of people and goods while at the same time promoting economic prosperity and preserving the quality of our environment and communities is a challenge. The long range transportation plan (LRTP) is an essential tool used by Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) to meet these challenges, and PBS&J has extensive experience assisting in the development of LRTPs that meet federal requirements and ensure a continuing, cooperative, and comprehensive regional transportation planning process. Our professionals have assisted in the preparation of LRTPs for numerous clients and projects ranging from major metropolitan regions to small, urbanized areas and from complete travel demand model development efforts to studies where only limited elements of the LRTP are updated.
An effective LRTP must reflect a multimodal transportation system and identify and address not only transportation improvements anticipated over the next 20 to 25 year horizon, but also short range strategies including intelligent transportation systems (ITS), travel demand management (TDM), intersection improvements (turn lanes and traffic signals), and congestion management.
One key element in bringing all those variables together is a sound public involvement program that promotes communication among stakeholders and fosters meaningful citizen participation. PBS&J is experienced in the use of community impact assessments and environmental justice plans; two invaluable tools used to reach historically underserved populations and their transportation needs.
