PBS&J Becomes Traffic & Travel Information Center (TIC) System Provider
San Francisco, CA – GEWI GmbH, a Germany-based company, announced PBS&J as the first North American “TIC System Provider” of its industry-leading transportation data fusion software. PBS&J will provide GEWI’s Traffic & Travel Information Center (TIC) system to federal, state and local departments of transportation (DOTs) in North America.
PBS&J will be responsible for TIC project development, design, configuration, implementation, training and support while GEWI will handle second-line support and application updates.
Pioneering this incident reporting software to U.S. DOTs and agencies will address transportation data collection and fusion needs. Building on signature traveler information project experience, PBS&J now offers a way for DOTs to provide flexible incident reporting system solutions while meeting relevant U.S. and international standards. PBS&J’s in-house team of travel information specialists, specifically the National Transportation Network Information Services (TNI) Division, will give government agencies the opportunity to use TIC to quickly and cost-effectively develop and operate a robust traffic and travel information system.
Agencies will be able to quickly input and collect data from manual and automated sources, process and fuse the data, then format and distribute information for an extremely wide variety of uses – 511 telephony services, Web sites, and vehicle navigation systems are just a few of the possibilities.
TIC, which can deploy as an Application Service Provider (ASP) or as a customer-hosted solution, is already installed and supporting over 60 different clients and projects worldwide, and is pre-configured for multi-lingual data entry and delivery.
GEWI launched its TIC software in North America in 2004, and NAVTEQ, a leading global provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, was the first company to implement GEWI’s TIC software in a North American traffic solution. NAVTEQ has integrated GEWI’s TIC software to enable the automatic aggregation and monitoring of NAVTEQ Traffic™. NAVTEQ Traffic enables navigation systems to provide personalized, real-time traffic information for a driver’s chosen route. The solution aggregates multiple sources and types of information including planned incidents (construction and road closures), unplanned incidents (accidents, stalled vehicles, etc.) and flow data (speed and movement of traffic).
“We are excited about working with PBS&J to bring TIC to the North American public sector market,” said Hagen Geppert, Managing Director of GEWI. “We have nearly a decade of experience in implementing and enhancing TIC for public and private sector applications worldwide and believe our application will revolutionize the market, as it has done in Europe.” “Increasingly, agencies are recognizing the need to create an integrated picture of travel and traffic conditions, both to support their operations and provide information to system users, the traveling public. We have found that currently available applications are sorely limited in their ability to integrate the wide range of information being gathered today by agencies, such as lane closures, incidents, speeds, travel times, and congestion,” said Rick Schuman, PBS&J’s TNI Division Manager.
“Also, today’s applications, whether developed in-house or commercially-available, have difficulty in seamlessly supporting the requirements of urban and rural areas, and thus often force agencies into implementation compromises,” Schuman said. “TIC addresses these issues of information and geographic diversity.”
TIC software updates are available to keep in step with the latest needs. Public transit conditions and incidents, decision support for traffic management, and dynamic message signs are already in the planning process.
