Tampa, FL Howard M. Budd Post, one of the founders of the engineering, science, and architecture consulting company, Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc. (PBS&J), died June 10. He was 83 years old.
Born in Oradell, New Jersey, on August 25, 1924, Mr. Post grew up in Miami, Florida, and was a pioneer engineering graduate of the University of Miami. He served as an infantryman during World War II, as a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War, and in the Army Reserves into the 1970s. He was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor.
Mr. Post was employed for 12 years as a resident engineer with the Florida State Road Department, which later became the Florida Department of Transportation, where he supervised the construction of $30-million worth of interstate expressway projects in the Miami area.
In 1960, Mr. Post brought together three colleagues to form what today is known as Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc. (PBS&J). Today the company is noted as the 29th largest engineering company in the nation. He was PBS&Js principal in charge for such signature projects as Floridas first planned new town, Miami Lakes, Florida; the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida; and the Card Sound Bridge, which connects Miami-Dade County with Monroe County, Florida. He also personally provided county engineering services for Monroe County during the 1960s and 1970s. Mr. Post officially retired from PBS&J in 1977, but continued to work on assignments into the 1980s. He spent his remaining years with his wife of more than 50 years, Jeanne, in the Florida Keys and their Miami Springs home until relocating to Tampa in 2004. In addition to his wife, Mr. Post is survived by his son, Jim Post, a resident of Land O Lakes, Florida, and three grandchildren, Shannon, Devin, and James.
Through the years, Budd Post generously gave back to his profession, serving on the Florida Board of Professional Engineers, the Board of Directors of the Florida Engineering Society, and the American Society of Civil Engineers Committee of Professional Practice. He was also a past president of the Miami Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society and received the chapters Engineer of the Year Award for the 1976-1977 membership year. A lifelong Florida Keys enthusiast, Mr. Post was a former trustee and past president of the Pennekamp Coral Reef Institute, a nonprofit organization in Upper Key Largo developed to enhance and protect Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
In 2000, in honor of Mr. Posts contributions to the company he founded and to his profession, PBS&J established the Howard M. Post Award for Technical Achievement. This prestigious annual award recognizes PBS&J employees for solving the most challenging and complex technical project issues for PBS&J clients.
"We will remember Budd Post for his dedication to building PBS&J through hard work and service to our clients and his profession, states John Zumwalt, chairman and chief executive officer of The PBSJ Corporation.
