Watershed Management

As population growth continues, flooding and related water quality degradation have become critical issues in many watersheds.  Potential loss of life and property—as a result of disruptions to natural drainage patterns—makes sound watershed management planning critical for every community. For many years, PBS&J has worked within EPA, FEMA, state, regional, and local guidelines to develop watershed management plans that provide watershed management solutions for the long term. These solutions ease chronic flooding and protect human health and safety while also preserving a watershed's natural resources.

PBS&J has worked with many entities to develop and implement their watershed management plans.  Our watershed management plans address assessments of water quality, flood hazard mitigation, and the stream stabilization/restoration aspects of flood-prone areas—using this information as the basis for the integrated solutions that will solve these problems. All of these plans have been built on our understanding of the complexities associated with priority setting, and our desire to create solutions that are clear and reasonable for both decision makers and the public.

Moreover, PBS&J has developed many powerful GIS and Web-based automated tools that reduce the overall effort in preparing these plans. For example, we have developed an automated cost estimation tool to accurately estimate the costs of future flood control facilities based on bid tabs, the actual costs of the facilities. All of these tools, in the hands of PBS&J’s engineers and scientists who are experts in the field, can be invaluable to communities who are searching for answers to their questions about watershed management and natural resources preservation.
