A GIS is a computer system that holds and uses both locational and descriptive information about places on the earth's surface. GIS helps determine relationships, trends and patterns of different sets of data using location as the common key. These computer systems have revolutionized the analysis of geographically referenced information, which was formerly accomplished via the cumbersome, tedious, and time-consuming manual method of overlaying one map on another.
