Mesquite Comprehensive Park Master Plan
|
Location:
|
Mesquite, Nevada |
As one of the fastest growing communities in the United States and with land values skyrocketing, the City of Mesquite, Nevada, recognized the need to address the communitys parks needs and ensure that ample recreational space would be provided for the community. PBS&J was selected to assist the city in developing a comprehensive park master plan to serve as a guide for the development of a community-wide park system that would meet the needs of its citizens for the next 20 years. Services provided by PBS&J included planning, engineering, and park design concepts.
The master plan identified park needs, developed park prototypes, and created a comprehensive trail system linking individual neighborhoods throughout the community. Working with J.W. Zunino & Associates, PBS&J inventoried all existing parks, reviewed the demographics, and coordinated with a local committee to develop different concepts and uses for specific parks. It was determined that rodeo grounds and community parks were major requirements, along with the need for major and minor parks connected by a trail system. The trail system would be used for equestrians, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Traditional park amenities including baseball and softball fields, basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts were provided at the major and minor parks. In addition to developing prototypes for each park category, site design was provided for a large regional park with gardens, and the rodeo and fairgrounds. The Mesquite Comprehensive Park Master Plan won the Nevada Chapter American Planning Association Award for Master Planning.
