Hawks Pointe Community

Location: La Mirada and Fullerton, California
Client: Centex Homes

Hawks Pointe is one of the largest master-planned communities jointly approved by neighboring cities, with the City of Fullerton in Orange County and the City of La Mirada in Los Angeles County agreeing to the construction of 335 homes. A former oil field, with a hillside component, the 144-acre residential development was planned and designed to be compatible with the surrounding land uses, and to preserve and enhance the natural environs. Efforts towards preserving and enhancing the natural conditions included preserving 50 acres of open space for land mitigation, a 14-acre expansion to Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, and the design of a 9,000-foot rail corridor.

PBS&J provided site and civil engineering, utility design, traffic engineering, roadway design, and stormwater management system planning and design services. The earth excavation efforts to create this hillside community were significant, involving 2.5 million cubic yards of earth with eight hundred thousand cubic yards of remedial excavation. Other design challenges included a two-million gallon and a three-million gallon above ground steel reservoir and associated pump station; improvements to 3,500-feet of State Highway 39; and connections to the county flood control facility, Coyote Creek. In addition, PBS&J assisted with obtaining permit approvals and coordinating with eight governmental agencies, including the cities of Fullerton, La Mirada, and Los Angeles; Caltrans; and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
