US 95 Intelligent Transportation System

Location: Clark County, Nevada
Client: Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT)

PBS&J provided ITS design services to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to develop detailed plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for approximately 14.5 miles of freeway through Las Vegas, including the segment of US 95 between the I-15/US 95 “Spaghetti Bowl” Interchange and north Durango Drive. The system is an extension of the Las Vegas Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation (FAST) traffic management system, supported by a synchronous optical network (SONET) fiber-optic network running along both sides of the roadway.

In the preliminary stages of this assignment, PBS&J furnished services to NDOT for predesign review and system analysis including preliminary design required due to progress of road-widening projects. More than 30 official construction and integration submittals were coordinated with the road-widening consultants and the NDOT. PBS&J incorporated the design of fiber-optic conduit, pull boxes, and foundations into the road-widening plans developed by three consultants. In addition, a separate PS&E package was developed for the ITS devices and integration of the system, including the following:

  • Seventeen closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras
  • Nine dynamic message signs (DMS)
  • Remote traffic microwave sensor (RTMS) detection stations
  • Traffic management center modifications design
  • Temporary ITS design for construction phases
  • Ramp metering with video image detection
