511 Deployment Coalition

The national 511 logo is used extensively by deployers in marketing the service to consumers.

Location: Washington, DC
Client: American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials (AASHTO)

PBS&J is providing program management and technical support services to the 511 Deployment Coalition under contract to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The Coalition, a partnership of AASHTO, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), and the U.S. Department of Transportation, was formed in late 2000 to address the opportunity presented to the transportation industry by the July 2000 ruling of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which designated the 511 phone number for traveler information.

PBS&J serves as the Coalition’s staff, responsible for establishing the Coalition, facilitating the efforts of its dozens of volunteers, and keeping the Coalition on schedule in its efforts to aid 511 deployers. PBS&J has been integral to the Coalition’s early success by conducting three executive level policy retreats, establishing implementation guidelines describing the transportation information that should be provided via 511 and how to address certain issues that will affect the consistency of 511 services across the country, publishing information reports, producing technical and policy papers used to educate and assist 511 deployers, and conducting two national conferences on 511.
