The 436 Cleaners (cleaners) is a commercial dry cleaning facility located in a shopping center in Casselberry, Florida, which was found to be the site of a release of tetrachloroethane (PCE). The contamination was discovered during a Phase II environmental site assessment, and PBS&J was contracted to assess the extent of, and remediate, the impacts to the soil and groundwater.
The assessment was conducted in phases, using direct-push technology (DPT) to collect soil and groundwater samples from discrete depth intervals in the upper 50 feet of the subsurface adjacent to the cleaners site. DPT was also used to evaluate the lithologic framework of the subsurface throughout the impacted area, to determine the migration pathway of PCE plumes in groundwater. Monitoring wells were installed to delineate the limits of impact and as points to measure the groundwater flow characteristics.
The impacted soil was found to be limited to the source area and at relatively low concentrations, while the impacts to the groundwater extended approximately 150 feet to a detention pond located on the property, and limited vertically to the upper 25 feet of the shallow aquifer beneath the site. PBS&J developed a remedial action plan (RAP) which included evaluating several different remediation options, including air sparging/soil vapor extraction, pump-and-treat, bioremediation, and hydrogen-releasing compounds (HRC). Based on plume geometry, contaminant concentrations, and the anticipated duration of remediation, PBS&J selected air sparging and soil vapor extraction (AS/SVE) as the most viable treatment alternative for the site.
