Coastal and Marine Resources With the majority of the human population now living in or near the coastal zone, impacts to coastal and marine resources have been a major focus of environmental conservation and regulatory programs during the past two decades. To assist federal, state, and local agencies involved in these efforts, PBS&J has developed exceptional expertise in the marine sciences, and coastal zone planning and management. Today, PBS&J employs over 40 technical professionals with academic backgrounds and professional experience in fields such as marine and estuarine ecology, fisheries biology, coastal and submarine geology, and oceanography. The firm maintains a scientific diving team dedicated to submarine ecological and engineering investigations, as well as specialized equipment to support coastal and marine data and sample collection activities.
PBS&J has provided services for numerous EPA-supported National Estuary Programs in Florida, Texas, and the Chesapeake Bay, on projects ranging from the development of a nitrogen budget and management strategy, to the assessment of historic habitat losses and preparation of quantitative habitat restoration targets. In addition, PBS&J has provided technical support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other public agencies related to dredged material management, monitoring of protected coral reef communities, compliance with the Coastal Zone Management and Clean Water Acts, and preparation of coastal habitat restoration plans.
