Orlando Sanford International Airport has grown into a major international terminal for Central Florida.

Location: Sanford, Florida
Client: Orlando Sanford International Airport

Orlando Sanford International Airport, located approximately 20 miles north of Orlando has grown into a major international terminal for Central Florida, surpassing the Orlando International Airport in international passengers during peak months. PBS&J serves as the airport’s general engineering consultant (GEC), providing comprehensive airport planning, engineering, and construction services. To accommodate the significant changes that have occurred at the airport, PBS&J performed an airport master plan study to help ensure that airport facilities would be adequate to meet both short- and long-term demand for aviation services, and serve as a management guide for the implementation of necessary improvements to meet both existing and forecast growth in aviation demand over a 20-year period.

The comprehensive master plan developed an inventory of current facilities, presented forecasts of growth, provided a plan for additional development including cost estimates, as well as an economic impact assessment. Forecast increases indicated the need for an expansion of the operational capacity of the airfield, with recommended improvements including extension of the three primary runways and associated taxiways, and construction of a new parallel runway. Associated planning efforts included an FAR Part 150 update, annual DBE program review, economic impact analysis, environmental assessment, and stormwater management plan.
